Welcome your local natural engineers to Avon's waterways

We lost beavers from our rivers over 400 years ago. Now these enigmatic creatures are back in Avon and need your help to build a wildlife-rich future along our waterways.

We must act now to fight back against the twin climate and ecological emergencies, but did you know that beavers could be part of the solution? Beavers use their skills to shape their waterside environments – this creates habitats for a kaleidoscope of other creatures, reduces flooding and prevents drought, and even absorbs carbon. But these natural engineers need your help to re-establish their waterway homes.

Avon’s budding beaver population is still in the early days of territory expansion. With the right support, numbers could grow by 30% each year, making it more likely to catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures along riverbanks and streams across our region.

Now that our beaver neighbours are starting to branch out their explorations, it’s more important than ever to support, protect and share what we’re learning about these wonderful, wild engineers as they settle into their new homes along the Avon.

I want to build a home for beavers in Avon

It is vitally important that we protect these amazing aquatic architects whilst they establish themselves along our rivers. A gift to beavers now could help me engage with local communities and landowners, enabling us all to learn to live alongside these beautiful creatures again, and reap the rewards of their industrious habitat creation.

Together, we can ensure Avon’s beavers live safely as they harness their natural environment. By shaping the future of beavers now, your gift can build a wildly improved future for the local wild places you love.

Together, we can protect beavers as they branch out along our rivers

Since the unexpected discovery of Avon’s wild beaver population in 2020, Avon Wildlife Trust has been working as part of the Beaver Management Group – a group of professional beaver supporters from organisations across our region – to support and keep track of our new neighbours as they re-establish themselves locally. Three years on, beavers are starting to spread across the Avon area as they look for new homes along our riverbanks. By working to understand our local waterway habitats and making our sites as beaver-friendly as possible, these elusive creatures are now setting up home on our reserves!

The more they explore, the more our growing beaver family will come into contact with homes, farms and human engineering. We haven’t lived alongside beavers for centuries, so this makes it all the more vital to support and protect our budding population. Your generosity could help map their progress to identify potential areas of conflict in advance, and give us the opportunity to reach out to communities along the Avon to share what we’re learning from the new arrivals and celebrate their positive impact on our wonderful local wild places.

Please help support and protect your local wild engineers today. A gift to beavers now is a gift to the wildlife you love for generations to come.
