How we stand up for wildlife

Local wildlife needs a voice

Avon Wildlife Trust speaks out on issues that threaten wildlife in our region. We challenge proposed development that infringes wildlife protection. We respond to local and national government consultations on environmental policy, making the case for wildlife. We support our members and supporters to connect with their local MP’s and decision makers on issues that have consequences for local wildlife.

Working with others

When we need to amplify our voice, we work in partnership with other NGO’s, corporate companies and local authorities. We work with other Wildlife Trusts to promote solutions and alternatives to propositions that endanger the future for our local wildlife. Our project work is building evidence that demonstrates the vital role nature plays in health and wellbeing , in community development  and in engaging young people.

How to raise your voice to support Avon's wildlife

How do I contact my local MP?

Type your postcode into the box on this webpage to find your local MP, their contact details and everything they have been doing lately in Parliament and in your local area. https://www.theyworkforyou.com

What do I say in a letter to my MP?

Your MP has been elected to listen to your views and concerns, to respond to you if you make contact about these concerns, and to represent concerns in the UK parliament when many people share the same view on an issue. The issue can be something that affects your local area, or something national or international. However, MP’s tend to respond more effectively to an issue if there are a lot of people showing concern about the same issue. Online petitions have become very popular as a mechanism to help lots of people raise their voices over a specific issue, and they can be effective. However, the most effective way to demonstrate your concern about an issue, for example local wildlife, is to put pen to paper and write an old fashioned letter. If an MP receives many letter through the post about an issue, they will begin to pay attention. They also have a legal obligation to respond to you and inform you about what they will be doing to address your concern.

Thriving wildlife relies on thriving habitats. Unfortunately, wildlife habitat is constantly under threat as a result of development (like houses, roads, buildings, airports), and also because fewer people know how to care for nature. One in ten species of wildlife in the UK is under threat of extinction from our shores. Our members make a monthly donation to help us care for our nature reserves and other wild places to ensure local wildlife has connected, healthy natural landscapes where they care feed, breed and move with ease. Members also support our work to inspire and teach people (from age one to one hundred!) how to care for wildlife wherever they live.

What is Avon Wildlife Trust doing to address the plans for 100,000 new homes in our region?

We are collaborating with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust to promote the Building With Nature benchmark to planners and developers. This is a set of guidelines that illustrates how to design nature in at the beginning of the planning and development process, so people and wildlife can thrive.
