About the event
Join us at Grow Wilder for an introduction to the world of grafting, with a focus on fruit trees.
This workshop is suitable for adults only - no previous experience is necessary but will be of interest to keen gardeners and those with some horticultural experience.
Course content:
-Principles of grafting – how it works and why it’s useful
-Material selection – considerations when selecting rootstock and scion material
-Grafting techniques – we’ll look at several techniques and discuss the merits and limitations of each
-Equipment and aftercare – everything you need to get started and to care for your grafted tree
-Knife safety and practice – how to make safe cuts and plenty of practice to get you confident using each of the techniques discussed
-You’ll end by grafting an apple tree to take home
What you’ll need to bring:
We’ll provide all materials needed for you to graft an apple tree to take away. You’ll need to bring your own knife – this doesn’t have to be a grafting knife; a small folding Opinel-type knife or sharp craft ‘Stanley’ knife will also work well.
You’ll be able to choose from a selection of apple varieties grown on site at Grow Wilder but you’re welcome to bring your own scion material if you wish.
We will provide refreshments throughout the day but you will need to bring your own lunch.
